Al Jolson, whose real name was Asa Yoelson, was a Lithuanian-born singer, actor, and comedian who became one of the most famous performers of his time. He was born in 1886, in the city of Srednik in Lithuania. His parents were Jewish immigrants who had moved to the United States when he was a child. Jolson grew up in Washington, DC, where he was exposed to the world of entertainment by his father, who was a cantor in a local synagogue.
Jolson began performing at a young age, singing in local vaudeville shows and minstrel shows. He quickly gained a reputation as a talented performer, and in 1909, he was signed to a contract by the famous producer and booking agent Gus Edwards. Edwards helped Jolson launch his career as a solo performer, and he began touring the country, performing in theatres and music halls.
Jolson's big break came in 1911, when he was hired to star in a new musical called “La Belle Paree”. The show was a huge success, and Jolson became a household name almost overnight. He was known for his energetic and charismatic performances, and he quickly became one of the most popular entertainers in the country.
