Biografía de Pope Benedict XVI
Pope Benedict XVI, whose birth name was Joseph Ratzinger, was born in Marktl am Inn, Germany, on April 16, 1927. His father was a police officer, and his mother was a hotel cook. He had one older sister. During his childhood, his family moved frequently due to his father's job, and he grew up in rural Bavaria.
As a young man, Ratzinger was conscripted into the German army during World War II. However, he was soon released from service due to illness. After the war, he studied philosophy and theology in Munich and was ordained a priest in 1951.
In 1977, Ratzinger was appointed Archbishop of Munich and Freising, and in 1981, he became Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, a powerful position in the Vatican responsible for promoting and safeguarding Catholic doctrine. He was made a cardinal in 1977 and was elected Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, following the death of Pope John Paul II.
During his papacy, Pope Benedict XVI was known for his conservative views on social issues such as contraception and homosexuality. He also made efforts to improve Catholic relations with other religions, particularly Judaism and Islam.
In 2013, Pope Benedict XVI made the surprise announcement that he would be resigning from the papacy due to his age and declining health. He became the first pontiff to resign from the papacy in almost 600 years. Following his resignation, he retired to a private monastery in the Vatican.
