Sayoko Yamaguchi was born in a small village in Japan in 1949. Her parents ran a fish market and Sayoko grew up helping them out with the family business. Despite her love for fish, Sayoko had bigger aspirations. She was particularly fascinated by the fashion industry and moved to Tokyo after finishing high school to pursue a career in modeling.
Sayoko's modeling career started in the late 1960s, and she quickly rose to fame as the first Japanese model to work for the prestigious Parisian fashion house Yves Saint Laurent. Her success in France paved the way for her to work in other fashion capitals throughout the world, including Milan and New York. Sayoko was not only a successful model, but also an actress and television personality, appearing in several popular Japanese TV shows and movies.
In addition to her modeling and acting work, Sayoko was a vocal advocate for cultural exchange between Japan and the West. She saw fashion as a powerful tool for bridging cultural gaps and worked tirelessly to promote Japanese designers and fashion trends in the international arena. Her efforts earned her the prestigious title of Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization.
