Prunella Margaret Rumney West was born on April 22, 1931, in London, England. She was the youngest of four siblings and grew up in a wealthy family. Her father was an Army officer and her mother was a socialite. At an early age, Prunella showed an interest in acting and performed in school plays. She later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and graduated in 1952.
After graduation, Prunella began her acting career on stage. She made her debut in 1952 in the production of "The Relapse" at the Cambridge Theatre in London. Over the next few years, she appeared in several plays in London's West End, including "The Importance of Being Earnest" and "She Stoops to Conquer." In 1958, Prunella made her Broadway debut in the play "A Taste of Honey."
In the 1960s, Prunella began to make a name for herself on television. She appeared in several popular series, including "The Avengers" and "Z-Cars." She also had a recurring role in the series "The Forsyte Saga." In 1970, Prunella's career took off when she was cast as the character of Elizabeth Bellamy in the series "Upstairs, Downstairs." The show was a huge success and ran for five years. Prunella's performance earned her a BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 1975.
In the 1980s and 1990s, Prunella continued to work in television and film. She appeared in several popular series, including "Midsomer Murders" and "Agatha Christie's Poirot." She also had roles in films such as "Howards End" and "The Madness of King George." In 1995, Prunella was honored with a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for her services to drama.
