Manuel Gutiérrez Aragón (born January 2, 1942) is a well-known Spanish film director and scriptwriter. Before becoming a famous director, he underwent various stages of his professional and personal life that shaped him into who he is today. Gutiérrez Aragón was born in Cabrales, Asturias, and grew up in a family of farmers. His parents wanted him to become a priest, so he enrolled in a seminary school as a child. However, he did not want to pursue a career in the priesthood and later relocated to Madrid to study philosophy and literature.

While living in Madrid, Gutiérrez Aragón began to take courses in film-making and journalism. He wrote film reviews and contributed to several magazines. During this time, he met many influential film figures such as Luis Buñuel, Carlos Saura, and Victor Erice, who would all later inspire his work. In 1968, he directed his first feature film "First Case, Second Case" which won him critical acclaim and the Silver Bear in Berlin. He continued to make experimental films throughout the 1970s, with "Unfinished Piece for a Mechanical Piano" being his most notable.

In the 1980s, Gutiérrez Aragón became a prominent figure in Spanish cinema. He had a remarkable ability to portray the conflicts and challenges of Spanish society in his films. "El Sur" (The South), one of his best-known films, explores the relationship between a father and daughter living in two different worlds. His next film, "Demonios en el jardín" (Garden of Delights), dealt with themes of love, betrayal, and political tensions. It was widely considered one of the most important films of the 1980s.
