Arthur Miller’s famous play “Death of a Salesman” follows the tragic story of Willy Loman as he struggles to make ends meet as a traveling salesman. However, the play also touches on the lives of his family members, including his son, Biff, and his younger brother, Happy. Another key character in the play is Willy’s older brother, Ben, who made a fortune in Africa and serves as a symbol of success for Willy. There is also mention of another brother, who goes unnamed in the play, but who is said to have become a successful lawyer in Alaska. This unnamed brother is referred to as “the only Loman who made anything of himself.”

This brother is actually named later in the play as “Benjamin,” but he is only briefly mentioned. It is not until Miller’s later play, “The Price,” that we learn more about him. In “The Price,” we see two brothers, Walter and Victor, who are selling off their late father’s possessions. Walter, the older brother, became a successful doctor, while Victor, the younger brother, gave up his dreams of studying science to care for their father. They are visited by a furniture dealer named Solomon, who knew their father and reveals that their father had been visited by his long-lost brother, Benjamin, before he died.

According to Solomon, Benjamin had been a successful businessman and had made a fortune in the diamond trade. He had come to see his brother, Victor and Walter’s father, in hopes of reconciling with him after years of estrangement. However, their father refused to see him, and Benjamin left without ever seeing him.

While we don’t get to see much of Benjamin’s life in the plays, we can gather that he was a successful and wealthy man, likely much like the version of him that appears in Willy Loman’s memories in “Death of a Salesman.” However, it is also clear that he had a difficult relationship with his family and that his attempt at reconciliation was unsuccessful. His story serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of family and the high cost of success.
