José Gutiérrez-Solana was a versatile and multi-faceted personality who made his mark in various fields, including literature, painting and acting. Born in Madrid, Spain in 1886, he was raised in a family of middle-class intellectuals who had an interest in the arts. His father was a painter and a musician, and both his parents encouraged his artistic interests from a young age.
As a teenager, José showed a keen interest in literature and began writing poetry, short stories and essays. He also became interested in the visual arts and began painting in oils, watercolors and charcoals. However, he never received any formal training in art or literature, and was largely self-taught.
In his twenties, José became involved in the literary and artistic circles of Madrid, where he befriended many prominent writers and artists of the day. Among them were the poets Juan Ramón Jiménez and Antonio Machado, and the painters Ignacio Zuloaga and Joaquín Sorolla.
José's early literary work drew upon his experiences growing up in Madrid and his observations of the city's working-class neighborhoods. His poems and stories portrayed the struggles and hardships of common people, and he was especially interested in the lives of prostitutes, street vendors and beggars.
In the years leading up to World War I, José became increasingly involved in leftist politics and social activism. He joined the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party and participated in various protests and demonstrations. His political activism also influenced his art, and he began producing paintings that were overtly political in nature. One of his most famous works from this period is his painting "La familia del trabajador", which depicts a working-class family struggling to make ends meet.
During the 1920s and 1930s, José's literary and artistic work continued to gain prominence in Spain and abroad. However, it was during this time that he also became interested in acting, and he appeared in a number of films and plays over the next several decades. Among his most famous roles were his portrayal of the philosopher Socrates in Luis Buñuel's film "Los Olvidados" (1950) and his performance as the villainous Dr. Velasco in the Spanish horror classic "El Espinazo del Diablo" (2001).
