Biografía de David V. Picker
David V. Picker was born on May 14, 1931 in New York City. He was the son of Vaudeville performers, Jack and Sadie Picker, who later became film producers. Despite being exposed to the world of entertainment from an early age, Picker initially pursued a career in advertising. He graduated from Yale University with a degree in English in 1953 and spent a decade working for various advertising agencies.
However, Picker's love for film led him to make a career change in the early 1960s. After a chance meeting with legendary film director, Ingmar Bergman, Picker was offered the position of Vice President of Production at United Artists. During his time at United Artists, Picker oversaw the production of several iconic films, including the James Bond franchise and the Beatles' film, A Hard Day's Night.
In 1971, Picker left United Artists to become President of Paramount Pictures. During his time at Paramount, he was instrumental in the production of several classics such as The Godfather, Love Story, and Harold and Maude. Picker was also responsible for the acquisition of the novel Jaws which led to the blockbuster film of the same name.
After leaving Paramount, Picker continued to work in the film industry as an independent producer and consultant. He played a critical role in the success of several films, including the Woody Allen comedy Sleeper and the Burt Reynolds film, The Longest Yard. He also served on several boards, including the National Board of Review and the Palm Springs International Film Festival.
Throughout his career, Picker was known for his ability to identify talented filmmakers and writers. He launched the careers of many successful filmmakers such as Woody Allen, Peter Bogdanovich and Robert Altman. In recognition of his contributions to the film industry, Picker was awarded the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' John Huston Award in 2003.
David V. Picker was a pioneer in the film industry and his legacy lives on through the films he helped produce and the careers he helped launch. He passed away on April 21, 2019 at the age of 87, leaving behind a lasting impact on the world of cinema.
