Biografía
Animador, dibujante y director de películas de dibujos animados norteamericano, nacido en Taylor, Texas. Famoso creador de personajes animados que incluyen al Pato Lucas, Bugs Bunny, Droopy, Porky y Chilly Willy, entre una larga lista de creaciones. Avery comenzó su carrera de dibujante trabajando en los estudios de Walter Lantz, en la década de los 30, modelando aspectos del personaje llamado Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Fue en esas dependencias donde un clip le dañó su ojo izquierdo, del que perdió la visión. Hubo críticos que al analizar su obra sostuvieron que la pérdida de la visión estereoscópica fue la responsable de su particular manera de dirigir a los personajes animados. Hacia finales de 1935, Avery se instaló junto a su equipo, que incluía a Bob Clampett y a Chuck Jones, en un bungalow que llegó a ser conocido como "Termit Terrace" (terraza de termitas), por la numerosa población de esos insectos, con los que convivían. Precisamente con ese apodo tan particular fueron identificados todos los componentes de la caricatura Warner Bros. El primer corto fruto de esa producción se llamó Golddiggers (Buscadores de Oro, 1949), que hizo del cerdito Porky su estrella principal. A partir de ese trabajo, y con la incorporación de Frank Tashlin como director asociado, Avery desarrolló las líneas sobre las que su extensa y exitosa filmografía comenzó a rodar. Paulatinamente la serie Looney Tunes (Tonadillas Chifladas) desplazó a la serie Merrie Melodies (Melodías Alegres), con la creación de personajes, animales en su mayoría, con personalidades de comportamientos lunáticos, extraordinaria fantasía, conducta errática aunque dotados de una suerte irreductible como propio valor. Entre estos personajes enigmáticos, a los que nadie podría pedirles una lógica justificación, se erigió el pato Lucas. También intervino en el desarrollo de la personalidad del conejo Bugs Bunny con posterioridad a la serie de cortos que dirigió Ben Hardaway, haciendo del conejo un ser más sutil y más moderno. Pero el personaje más famoso de su invención apareció en 1943 en la forma de un pequeño perro de orejas grandes y pelo colorado que respondía al nombre de Droopy. Avery dejó la MGM en 1953 y regresó el estudio de Walter Lantz, origen de su periplo laboral. Allí dirigió cuatro caricaturas hasta 1955, en las dos últimas surgió el pingüino Chilly Willy de gran impacto en la población juvenil, pero la relación con Walter Lantz se tensa por diferencias salariales, y Avery renunció, poniendo fin a su ilustre carrera en la gran industria del entretenimiento.
